Beneath the velvet curtain where the shadows turn to blue,
I lean out from my window just to catch a glimpse of you.
A girl with endless questions for the silent, silver sphere,
I wonder if you know the way that humans hold you dear.
To some, you are an angel keeping watch from high above,
A faithful, quiet messenger who carries words of love.
A witness to our secrets and the stories that we weave,
The one who sees the silent tears when lonely spirits grieve.
We say you are a mirror of the restless human mind,
Though we are never half as cool, or calm, or so refined.
And though you’re always whole yourself, we watch you wax and wane,
Comparing all our broken lives to cycles and to rain.
The days you pass us softly in your journey through the height
Are grand and holy moments in our small and mortal sight.
We dread the dark eclipse and hide away in sudden fear,
Yet start our lives on New Moons when the sky is sharp and clear.
We celebrate your fullness with a fire in our bones,
While you sit in the silence on your cratered, dusty thrones.
You pull the heavy oceans, you command the shifting tide – How do you stay so peaceful with such power deep inside?
A billion souls look upward, caught in wonder at your grace,
Enchanted by the ancient light upon your glowing face.
A thousand songs and stories try to capture who you are – Our nearest, dearest mystery, and our charming superstar.
A few have come to visit you and walk upon your white,
But still you stay an enigma in the middle of the night.
So sleep well in your cradle, dear Moon, within the sky,
While I watch you from my window till the sun begins to rise.
